Good Friday

Yes, it's a good Friday today!

'W' day went well and I managed to lose 2 and a half pounds from mainly eating rubbish this week. I'm quite pleased with that. I'm only saying quite pleased as usually I'd expect a bigger weight loss on my first week of embarking upon a diet, but due to the fact that my choices have not been as healthy as they could of been I'm pretty chuffed really.

So, what I have learnt this week? Probably that portion control is one of the things I need to change about my eating habits (even my Mum pointed this out to me yesterday!) I've eaten rubbish, but I've controlled how much rubbish I've stuffed into my mouth. I've weighed and measured absolutely everything that has passed my lips, and, if I've been hungry I've chosen healthier things to fill the gap rather than just having more of the wrong things.

Portion control is a bit of a shocker really, what I would class as a normal portion size is not what I have in my head. Other diets I've done usually give a list of 'free' foods which you can eat to your hearts content. For example, if I've been on a green day on slimming world I've been able to eat things like potatoes and pasta freely, so would make a big mountainous pile on my plate and stuff myself silly. Or, on a red day I'd pile my plate up with meat and have fewer potatoes. With Weight Watchers I've been able to mix all the foods I like, but weighing them into the correct portion size has made me realise that you shouldn't be eating a plate full of food higher than the Chrysler building. Facing facts, I've been troffing like a pig and it needs to change.

Typical normal sizes should be as follows:
  • A medium portion of spaghetti (dry weight) is 40g and should be the diameter of a 5p coin
  • A medium portion of cheese (40g) is the size of a small matchbox
  • A medium portion of cooked rice (150g) is the size of a small tuna tin
  • A standard scoop of mashed potato (60g) is the size of a lime

When I think about the above 'normal' sizes I cower in shame! I must be American at heart, I've been totally supersizing for years. Not only supersizing, but eating the whole lot too, it's not very often my plate is not empty at the end of a meal.
Learning to eat less will be a bit of a challenge for me, but it's gotta be done

Whilst browsing the Internet for an inspirational image for today's post, I came across this:

Small, medium, large and Horse

 Fitting don't you think?
